How often do we see this?

I was literally driving down the street in our neighborhood and saw this scene outside my local CVS Pharmacy. Stopped me in my tracks and caused me to pull out the Nikon CoolPix point 'n shoot that I carry loaded in my truck.

My niece, Superior Court Judge Asha F. Jackson

This was one of the happiest and proudest days in years. Today we watched my niece Asha get sworn to the Bench as a Superior Court Judge in DeKalb County, Georgia.

I was there for the moment in our family's history, was there with support and affection for Asha, but was also there to capture hundreds of snaps of the proceedings, from the swearing-in at the Capitol with Governor Deal to the reception later in the day in Decatur with Judge Michael Hancock (Ret.). And I did indeed take hundreds:

Oil on Canvas Portrait

Recent portrait of Frank Palma, of Frank Palma Associates. I told Frank that this image needs to be produced as an oil-on-canvas portrait hanging in the lobby of a bank or law firm. Very dapper and erudite gentleman from New Jersey, although he claims he's in Atlanta in the witness protection program. (Just kidding, of course).

Bessie Wins - 2006 Miss Black Georgia USA

Bear with me; I'll try to make this very lovely long story short...

In 2006, my young friend Bessie Winn entered the Miss Black Georgia USA beauty pageant. She had participated in the same event the previous year and placed but didn't win. Highly motivated to win the event in 2006 and knowing that I was a public speaker, she asked me to coach her on the content and delivery of her speaking event. Her platform was preventing child abuse and she was very passionate about it.

I was skeptical that I could do her any good, but of course agreed to coach her the best I could. She had other coaches for wardrobe, hair and a vocal coach who helped strengthen her singing event, and she and I worked on her speech and its delivery in great detail.

The end of the story was that she WON! And when the judges announced her as the winner they said that it was mostly on the strength of her very passionate speech. I couldn't have been prouder of her. Of course I also had my camera on the night of the pageant and caught these images.

Fast forward to 2011, and she is now Bessie A. Winn-Afeku, a wife and a Mom, and is the Founder and Executive Director of The She Is Me Program, a non-profit program that empowers young women.

Michelle Obama visits the ATL

On Wednesday, February 9, my Pastor (Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Hale) co-hosted an event celebrating the first anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign focused on stamping out childhood obesity. The First Lady was introduced by the Pastor and by the other co-host, Rev. Andy Stampley at Northpoint Church in Alpharetta. It was an awesome event.
